Salton Sea is a strategic Euro-style board game set in California’s geothermally active Salton Sea region, where players compete to build the most efficient renewable energy company.
In the game, players take on the role of geothermal energy entrepreneurs working to extract lithium-rich brine from deep underground. By drilling, managing infrastructure, and processing resources, you develop a modern, clean-energy operation focused on powering the global energy transition away from fossil fuels.
Designed by David Bernal and illustrated by Amelia Sales, the game supports solo play or 2–4 players, with sessions lasting around 120 minutes. Each player manages a team of engineers, placing them on action spaces to perform key operations such as exploration, drilling, extraction, industrial processing, contract management, research, and business development.
The gameplay is driven by worker placement mechanics, where timing and efficiency are critical. Players must balance short-term gains like contract fulfillment with long-term strategies such as technology upgrades, company expansion, and research advancements. Multiple scoring paths ensure no single strategy dominates, rewarding flexible planning and adaptation.
Victory goes to the player who most effectively harnesses the geothermal potential of the Salton Sea to build a high-performing, forward-thinking energy company.
